I realise that this isn’t something a lot of players are going to be able to do until they have found their VR legs. It took all of five minutes for me to decide to switch off the comfort settings and use the controller as you would normally. This is commonly thought of as the least vomit inducing method of getting about in VR. The default movement method is by teleportation- you point to where you want to be and BAM, there you are. You awaken in a lab with your dead torso hanging in front of you, your mind having been transferred to an artificial body.īefore you can boot up your systems, you need to complete a training programme to allow you to get to grips with the game’s VR locomotion mechanics, exclusive to Doom VFR. When the doors finally open a huge beast runs at you and the screen fades to black. The game starts out with you trapped in a lift whilst a battle against the demons occurs the other side of the metal doors. It is, instead, a Doom game specially designed for VR, set before the events of the main game. Unlike Skyrim VR, Doom VFR is not a direct port of the regular Doom game. In saying that, I’ll tell you right now, Doom VFR (the ‘F’ in the title is a reference to the franchise’s infamous BFG guns and apparently stands for the same rude word) is bloody good on the PSVR, and the certainly puts the ‘F’ in effing Hell! This is a shame, as the HTC Vive’s room-space VR and very accurate tracking would make for a good Doom VFR experience.

Doom VFR allows players to enter the world of Doom in virtual reality, without the need for PC mods (the 2012 PC version of Doom 3: BFG Edition can be modded to run in VR on the PC). Literally in the same breath as they launched the Switch version of Doom, Bethesda knocked out Doom VFR, a special VR version of the game, for PlayStation VR and HTC Vive (note: not the Oculus Rift).

Nintendo’s Switch recently joined the PC, PS4 and Xbox One in having a version of the game. Although hard when you manage to finish a level you will feel like the biggest badass in all of Hell.Like it’s stable-mate, Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the 2016 Doom reboot is gaining a reputation of being ported to every available game platform. I very often found myself screaming with the crescendo of the music as the very last demon fell to my onslaught. What DOOM VFR does is take rather simple systems and creates an intense act of carnage that it forces you to master. Juggling your health bar and ammo via shooting and telefragging is the key to mastering this combat system. If you stagger them and then teleport into them they will explode dropping more health items. If you kill an enemy via normal bullet-riddled means they will drop more ammo. There is a wonderful balance between health and ammo pickups that ties in with the combat. Stopping to line up a shoot or catch your breath is never a good idea. You always want to keep moving during this game. The most common mistake will be standing still. If you die then it’s because you did something wrong. Never enough to put me off the game as at no point does it feel unfair or unbalanced.

I found myself dying quite a few times during my playthrough. I found myself switching between both depending on my mood and the types of enemies I had to take on.Įven after you’ve got the hang of the controls this game is difficult. On the other hand, the movement is much more manageable with the PS4 controller. The freedom to be able to fire where you point your gun instead of where your looking makes shooting easier with the motion controllers.

Both the motion controllers and the standard PS4 controller have their ups and downs. You can also use the motion controllers during gameplay. Seeing as DOOM VFR was my first VR game I found the movement a little jarring at first but by the end of the game, it felt as natural as walking in real life. I personally never had an issue with this myself but VR affects everyone differently.

Those that suffer from motion sickness might want to avoid using the directional buttons. You can move in one of the 4 basic directions with the directional pad or use L2 to teleport around the area. Most of these furious creatures are capable of easily killing you so it’s vital you keep moving at all times.
